I upgraded my server from Server 2005 and didn't have any troubles maintaining all my roles and services. Only use this server as a domain controller, but having the ability to remote desktop access is definitely the next step for us.
Using this OS as a failover. Installed and didn't have any troubles setting up SQL or Hyper-V.
Went with Server 2008 R2 because I had an older database that required it. Works perfectly and I'm utilizing Terminal Services on a virtual machine as well.
